Coloring Drypoint Engraving

This workshop offers an introduction to colored printmaking as a space for artistic exploration and experimentation, where it covers the fundamentals of printing, including equipment and primary materials.

Participants will have the opportunity to delve deeper into color printing based on their level of experience and interest in the field. We will focus specifically on drypoint, a simple direct engraving method that does not require the use of chemicals. This technique involves using various engraving tools to create a wide range of lines, textures within the printed image. Plastic sheets can be used to achieve these effects. In addition, participants will have the chance to experiment with combining results obtained from direct engraving (such as cross hatching, stippling and scratching) with other techniques, such as collage and monotype, to achieve colorful prints.

It might be helpful to sketch your ideas and plan the layers of colors you want to achieve. Having a clear vision before the workshop can help you make the most of your time.

Research and Plate Preparation: Before starting the color engraving workshop, it is essential to conduct some theoretical research on the process of color engraving and become familiar with the different tools and materials used (through models and practical examples).
Prepare Plates: Participants will design their own artwork using two engraved plates. The depth and texture of the engraved lines determine the amount of ink that will be retained during printing. In color drypoint, these plates will be engraved with different parts of the design and inked with different colors. The plates will be printed successively, one on top of the other, to create a multicolored image, adding another dimension to the artwork.

Throughout the workshop, support and guidance will be provided to ensure a successful outcome.
