Selda Asal

Selda Asal ist eine Videokünstlerin aus der Türkei. Nach ihrem Studium der Musikwissenschaft und Kunst wurde Asal in den 1990er Jahren zu einer der Pionierfiguren der expandierenden zeitgenössischen Kunstszene Istanbuls. Ihre auf Videofilmen, Klanginstallationen und Musikvideos basierenden Projekte beschäftigen sich mit den sozialen und psychologischen Aspekten von Verlust und Trauma sowie mit Mechanismen und Politik der Erinnerung. Ausgehend von ihrer Neigung zur kollektiven Arbeit startete sie 1999 Apartment Project als eine der ersten von Künstler*innen betriebenen Ausstellungsräume in Istanbul mit dem Schwerpunkt auf interdisziplinärem Austausch, Teamarbeit und prozessorientierter Produktion. Seit 2012 arbeitet sie mit diesen Praktiken und kollektiven Produktionsmodellen im Apartment Project Berlin, das zum Treffpunkt und Arbeitsraum für Künstler aus der Türkei und anderen Ländern wurde. Die umfangreichen Gruppenprojekte, die sie initiiert und ermöglicht hat, wurden unter anderem in internationalen Kunstinstitutionen wie nGbk (Berlin, 2022-2019), Depo (Istanbul, 2017), Salon für Kunstbuch 21er Haus (Wien, 2016), Museum Weserburg (Bremen, 2015), Wilhelm-Hack-Museum (Ludwigshafen, 2014) gezeigt.

Selda Asal war 2022 Dozentin des bildungswerk-Projekts „Künstlerische Praxis im Feld der sozialen und ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit – Ohne Wenn und Aber“.

Selda Asal is a video artist from Turkey. After studying musicology and art, Asal became one of the pioneering figures of Istanbul’s expanding contemporary art scene in the 1990s. Her projects based video films, sound installations, and music videos deal with the social and psychological aspects of loss and trauma as well as the mechanisms and politics of memory. In line with her inclination for working collectively, she launched Apartment Project in 1999 as one of the first artist-operated initiative spaces in Istanbul with a focus on interdisciplinary sharing, teamwork, and process-oriented production. Since 2012 she has been working with these practices and collective production models at Apartment Project Berlin, which became the meeting point and working space for artists from Turkey and other countries. The extensive group projects she has initiated and facilitated have been hosted in international art institutions such as nGbk (Berlin, 2022-2019), Depo (Istanbul, 2017), Salon für Kunstbuch 21er Haus (Wien, 2016), Museum Weserburg (Bremen, 2016), Wilhelm-Hack-Museum (Ludwigshafen, 2014) among others.

Selda Asal was a lecturer in the bildungswerk project „Künstlerische Praxis im Feld der sozialen und ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit – Ohne Wenn und Aber“ in 2022.
