Multi-Plate Drypoint: Color Engraving

Workshop mit Yaser Safi

Beschreibung • Description

This workshop offers a practical introduction to color drypoint printmaking using three separate metal plates (copper or zinc), each representing a different color layer in the final artwork. Participants will learn to plan, engrave, and print in multiple colors with precise registration to align the layers, and experiment with transparent inks to create secondary colors and layered overlays.

We will begin with an introduction to the essential tools, materials, and the principles of multi-plate color printing, followed by the design and engraving of three plates, each carrying a distinct part of the composition. The depth and texture of the engraved lines will determine how much ink each plate holds, allowing for visual compositions that range from fine cross-hatching to bold, richly textured areas.

Research and Plate Preparation:

Through visual examples and demonstrations, participants will explore the fundamentals of multi-plate color printing before creating their own three, plate design. Each plate will be inked in its chosen color and printed in sequence to build the final multicolored image. Transparent inks may be used to add depth, subtle gradients, and nuanced color variations.

Individual guidance will be provided throughout to ensure strong creative and technical results.

The workshop will be conducted in English.
