Material-Based Textile Printing for Artists

This weekend intensive course is designed specifically for artists interested in expanding their practice through textile printing and surface-based processes.

The course explores print not as decorative design, but as a material language and artistic tool. Participants will work directly with fabric as a responsive surface, investigating repetition, layering, color interaction, and material behavior. Through hands-on experimentation, the workshop opens textile printing as a medium for artistic research, process-based exploration, and personal expression.

Focus of the Course

Textile as a conceptual and physical surface / Print as process rather than product / Repetition and rhythm as artistic strategies / Working with pigment, paste, and material response / Developing visual language through layered techniques

Teaching Approach

The course is process-led and material-driven.
Rather than focusing on polished outcomes, participants are encouraged to work through experimentation, repetition, and observation. Imperfection, material response, and unexpected results are treated as valuable information and creative tools. Technique is taught not only as a method of production, but as a way of thinking through material.

Techniques Explored

  • Hand screen printing
  • Stencil-based printing
  • Block / stamp printing
  • Manual pigment mixing
  • Puff print
  • Flock print
  • Foil print
  • Layered printing and Transparency

All techniques are safe, accessible, and studio-friendly, allowing deep material exploration without complex chemical processes.

What Participants Will Gain

Practical knowledge of manual textile printing and dyeing techniques/ Tools for designing repetitive patterns for continuous, infinite surfaces / Understanding of fabric as a soft, responsive, and variable material / Confidence working directly on textiles / A foundation for developing a personal textile language

Outcomes

Each participant will leave the course with:
A collection of printed and dyed textile samples
One or more developed textile surfaces or pattern systems
Practical skills applicable to independent practice, studio work, or design projects
A deeper understanding of textile-based thinking and material-led design
