Beschreibung • Description

For artists, art commissions offer an alternative path for engagement and income beyond gallery consignments and direct artwork sales. The art commission brief is a written list of relevant information on the art commission, provided by the commissioner. The brief usually sets the vision, direction and scope of the commission and can function as a
discursive document to be negotiated between the involved artists and commissioner, so that possibilities are not limited and fixed from the start.

Understanding the commission brief and effectively communicating with the commissioner are crucial steps toward securing a successful and smooth commission process.
We will work on covering its structure, priorities, and how to leverage this information in negotiations. Participants will gain practical insights into interpreting commission briefs, including industry standards, client interests, and effective negotiation strategies

The proposed workshop aims to provide structured clarity about the art commission brief, covering its structure, key points, priorities, and how to leverage this information in negotiations. Participants will gain the insights into the industry standards, client interests and negotiation strategies.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the art commission brief template with an overview of common points in commission briefs;
  • How to pinpoint the most important requirements and understand their hierarchy;
  • Learn effective communication with the commissioner with what to discuss, when to bring it up, and how to ensure clarity;
  • Diplomatic negotiation tactics to secure the best possible outcome;

Weihua, with over 10 years of experience and expertise in art commissions, will explain those topics in detail within the workshop. It will start with a visual presentation to go through the template of an art commission brief, following with actual commission examples. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the workshop, in which the participants can bring questions related to their own specific projects or applications.
