Beschreibung • Description

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the art of cinematic shots and composition, analysing examples from movies and animation movies, learning how to create visual storytelling that captivates and conveys emotion. We'll journey through the essential principles of framing, camera angles, and composition techniques, and discover how to apply them across various types of shots to build compelling scenes. By the end of the day, participants will have the skills and confidence to transform everyday visuals into cinematic experiences.
Prerequisites: basic-medium drawing skills required. To do either digitally on Procreate or any other digital support, but also on paper with traditional tools. No colors, we will use only black&white.

Workshop Outline:

  1. Introduction to Cinematic Composition
    • Overview of cinematic language and storytelling
    • Key concepts: rule of thirds, balance, depth, and leading lines
    • Impact of composition on mood and tone
  2. Understanding Shot Types and Their Purposes
    • Shot types: wide, medium, close-up, extreme close-up, etc.
    • How different shots build narrative and emotion
    • Practicing with basic shot setups in small groups
  3. Exploring Camera Angles and Movement
    • Types of camera angles (high, low, bird’s-eye, worm’s-eye, etc.)
    • How angles influence viewer perception
    • Basic camera movements: pan, tilt, zoom, and dolly
    • Hands-on practice creating sequences with movement and angles
  4. Storyboarding for Visual Flow
    • Basics of storyboarding for cinematic shots and composition
    • Mapping out visual sequences that flow and build tension or release
    • Group exercise: creating a storyboard for a short scene
  5. Critique and Refinement
    • Review of participant work with constructive feedback
    • Refining storyboards and shot compositions

Required: Familiarity with Procreate software. If you are unfamilar with the software, we would suggest first attending the course Procreate for Beginners
