WHAT KEEPS ME AWAKE...
Berlin is one of the vital centres for the visual arts in Germany and internationally. At the same time, many visual artists face structural challenges that limit their professional autonomy and social participation. Key issues include experiences of sexual harassment, sexualised violence and abuse of power, a high risk of poverty in old age, and a lack of inclusive structures.
These challenges are clearly highlighted in the recent study by bbk berlin entitled ‘Precarious Capital, Creative Existences – An empirical investigation by bbk berlin into the living and working conditions of artists in Berlin’. The data collected in the study show that these are not isolated difficulties, but rather systemic shortcomings across several areas of activity.
If these structural issues are not systematically addressed, there is a risk that measures in these relevant areas will remain purely symbolic. Our project therefore builds on the findings of the aforementioned study and aims to initiate concrete processes of change in the three indentified key areas. To this end, the project ‘What Keeps Me Awake…’ is developing a number of interconnected events designed to raise awareness, impart knowledge, facilitate exchange, identify existing gaps and foster networks. The aim is to develop strategies collectively and initiate initial approaches to solutions:
- Module I: Sexualised violence and abuse of power — analysis of existing structures, raising awareness and developing strategies for action.
- Module II: Old-age poverty in the visual arts — highlighting the economic risks and developing initial solutions.
- Module III: Visual arts need inclusion — identifying structural barriers and the strengths of inclusive frameworks.
Through lectures, workshops, participatory formats and networking events, the aim is to highlight sector-specific needs, bridge knowledge gaps and develop strategies for sustainable improvements. The modules are designed not only to provide visual artists with short-term guidance, but also to lay the foundations in the long term for professionally strengthening support structures and framework conditions within the field of visual arts.

It takes a Village: Colour System + From Bystander to Engaged Peer - Workshop with Anneleen Lemmens and Aike Roodenburg (Engagement Arts Belgium)
How can we move from cultures of silence to collective responsibility and solidarity?
It Takes a Village: From Bystander to Engaged Peer is a one-day workshop for cultural workers and artists ("peers") who want to contribute to a cultural field that is not only safer, but more sustainable and flourishing. With the tools we provide, we aim to collectively shift from bystander culture towards a sector built on shared responsibility, accountability and solidarity.
The workshop day consists of two parts. In the morning, we introduce the Colour System. This tool is a first step toward developing a shared language for talking about transgressive behaviour within professional art contexts. It provides practical guidance to approach situations - that are often perceived as ambiguous - in a more analytical and objective way. Participants work with criteria that can help examine and articulate why something is or is not okay in a specific context. These are then practiced through example situations. (The Colour System was developed by Sociaal Fonds Podiumkunsten in collaboration with Sensoa and Engagement Arts.)
In the afternoon, the focus shifts towards knowledge-sharing. We look at the psychological and structural barriers, as well as sector-specific risk factors, that play an important role. We explore what caring work environments can look like, map out the rights of artists and cultural workers (what does the law say?), and examine the available support network. All of this is made concrete through strategies for engaged peers, which are applied to a number of example situations discussed in the morning.
Programme:
- 10am-1pm (10-13 Uhr): The Colour System: A framework for identifying and analysing transgressive behaviour in workplace contexts.
- *Lunch 1-1.45pm (13-13:45 Uhr)
- 1.45-4.45pm (13:45-16:45 Uhr): It Takes a Village: From Bystander to Engaged Peer
Explores bystander culture and art-specific risk factors, outlines the legal framework and support pathways, and builds practical skills for moving from bystander to engaged peer.
