Prof. Dr. Käthe Wenzel

Käthe Wenzel kapert Strukturen des städtischen Konsums und liefert Survival Kits für das Überleben im Patriarchat: Prothesen, zur Ergänzung „mangelhafter“ Körper, Maschinen und Produkte zum Überwinden von Hindernissen der Hegemonialkultur. Sie beschäftigt sich mit Utopie, Zukunft und alternativen Weltentwürfen. Dazu infiltriert sie städtische Systeme und Service-Leistungen – von der Straße bis ins Internet.
Seit 2016 ist sie Professorin für Ästhetische Praxis in ihren Kontexten an der Europa-Universität Flensburg. Sie arbeitet international, auf der Straße, im Internet, in Kunst- und Nicht-Kunst-Räumen, und mit Museen und Kunstinstitutionen weltweit.
Sie war Fulbright Exchange Scholar an der School of Visual Arts, New York (2009-10) und Senior Fellow am IFK in Wien/Kunst_Uni Linz (2021); erhielt zahlreiche Förderungen und Stipendien, u.a. Stiftung Kulturfonds, Böll-Stiftung, NRW Stipendium Kunst-Wissenschaft-Wirtschaft, Karin-Abt-Straubinger-Stiftung, Künstlerdorf Schöppingen und andere.

Sie hat an internationalen Institutionen unterrichtet und studierte Kunstgeschichte, Englisch und Geschichte in Marburg, Florenz und Berlin. Promotion über “Fleisch als Werkstoff, Objekte auf der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Medizin” 2003 bei Prof. Dr. Horst Bredekamp.
Ihre Arbeiten finden sich in internationalen Sammlungen u.a. Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin, LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur - Westfälisches Landesmuseum, Artist’s Book Collection at Telavi State University, Georgia, Römer-Pelizäus-Museum Hildesheim.

Käthe Wenzel hacks into structures of Urban consumption, providing ready-to-go products to survive the patriarchy: prosthesis to complete bodies defined as lacking, machines and survival kits for tackling the obstacles of hegemonial culture. She works with alternative realities, the future, and innovative services for society, infiltrating urban systems and services – from the streets to the internet.

In 2016, she was appointed professor for Aesthetic Practice in its Contexts at European University Flensburg, Germany. She works internationally, on the street, in art- and non-artistic spaces, and on the internet, and has worked with museums and art institutions worldwide.
She has received prestigious grants and awards for her work, for example, as a Fulbright Exchange Scholar and guest professor at SVA in New York (2009-10), or as a Senior Fellow at the IFK in Vienna (2021). She received grants from Stiftung Kulturfonds, Böll-Stiftung, NRW Stipendium Kunst-Wissenschaft-Wirtschaft, Karin-Abt-Straubinger-Stiftung, Künstlerdorf Schöppingen, among others.

She has taught in Europe and the U.S., studied Art History, English and History in Marburg, Florence, and Berlin, studied with Prof. Dr. Horst Bredekamp and wrote her PhD about “Meat as a Material in Art – Objects on the interface of art and medicine” 2003.
